Botanical Name : WITHANIA SOMNIFERA

Common Name: WITHANIA, WINTER CHERRY, INDIAN WINTER CHERRY, INDIAN GINSENG, ASHWAGANDHA

Ashwaganda is a plant in the same family as the tomato. It grows as a stout shrub that reaches a height of five feet (170 centimeters). Like the tomato, ashwaganda bears yellow flowers and red fruit, though the fruit is berrylike in size and shape.

USES:

Ashwagandha is a time honored Ayurvedic herbal immune booster. Sometimes simply called Indian ginseng. Active ingredient are withanolides, similar to ginsenosides of Asian ginseng. It is an aphrodisiac and tonic and is used mainly to combat debility due to old age, nervous exhaustion and simple overwork. It nurtures and clarifies the mind, calms and strengthens the nerves, and promotes restful sleep. It rejuvenates flesh, marrow and reproductive fluid of male and female(impotence & infertility). Its has also been used in Alzeimer’s disease and multiple sclerosis.

The use of Ashwagandha in Ayurvedic medicine extends back over 3000 to 4000 years to the teachings of an esteemed rishi (sage) Punarvasu Atreya. It has been described in the sacred texts of Ayurveda, including the Charaka and Sushruta Samhitas where it is widely extolled as a tonic especially for emaciation in people of all ages including babies, enhancing the reproductive function of both men and women.

It has also been used for inflammations especially for arthritic and rheumatic conditions and as a major tonic to counteract the ravages of aging and promote youthful longevity. Some of its other traditional uses have been as a mild purgative for chronic constipation and for the treatment of swollen glands

Traditionally, Ashwagandha has been used in many ways–as a sedative, a diuretic, a rejuvenating tonic, an anti-inflammatory agent, and as an “adaptogen” (endurance enhancer). Many Western herbalists refer to this herb as “Ayurvedic ginseng” because of its reputation for increasing energy, strength, and stamina, and for its ability to relieve stress.

Botanical Name : BOSWELLIA SERRATA Common Name: INDIAN OLIBANUM TREE, OLIBANUM, SHALLAKI

Boswellia serratta, of the botanical family Burseraceae, is the scientific name for a tree of moderate height which grows in the dry hilly areas of India. The therapeutic value of the dried resinous gum (guggul), derived from tapping the Boswellia tree, has been known since antiquity. Boswellia gum was first mentioned in the ancient Ayurvedic treatises Sushrita Samhita and the Charak Samhita. It is also known as “dhup” or Indian frankincense

USES:

Traditionally, Boswellia gum has been used for the treatment of diabetes, skin and blood diseases, fever, cardiovascular disorders, neurological disorders, rheumatism, dysentery, diseases of the testes, and myriad of other disorders.

Today its major use is as an anti-inflammatory agent for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, low back pain, myositis, fibrositis, and osteoarthritis. In one study conducted at the Government Medical College in Jammu, India, nearly 60 percent of arthritic patients tested experienced good to excellent results against stiffness and pain. Over three-quarters of the patients in the study were either bedridden or incapacitated from doing normal work. Within two to four weeks after starting on the B. serrata extract, they reported a lessening of morning joint stiffness, pain, and improved grip strength. In another study of 26 patients suffering from arthritic knees, dramatic improvement was experienced within four weeks.

Experimental and clinical usage of boswella indicates it has none of the side effects on blood pressure, heart rate of the gastric irritation and ulcers associated with many anti-inflammatory and antiarthritic drugs. It is now an approved herbal medicine in India for use against osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, soft tissue rheumatism, low back pain, myositis and fibrositis.

In the United States, physicians are giving boswella high marks for effectiveness. Dr. E. W. McDonagh, a Kansas City physician, has reported success among some 350 patients suffering from a variety of advanced muscular and skeletal conditions for which other treatments had failed to help. “Many were taking multiple prescription and non-prescription medication and had developed side effects from them,” McDonagh says. “Once taking boswella as prescribed, pain significantly reduced p; or even vanished p; in two to four weeks’ time. All patients were able to eliminate other medication or reduce the dosages significantly.”
