Birth Control and Acne: How Does It Work? The link between birth control and acne is surprisingly simple. Birth Control Pills prevent pregnancy by changing the level of certain hormones in your body. One of these hormones is androgen, which stimulates oil production and increases acne. If you’re taking birth control pills that lower your androgen levels, you should see a reduction in the number of breakouts you experience. Generally, it takes between six and eight weeks to see results when using birth control to treat your acne. While most topical medications work to treat existing inflammation, the pill will prevent new outbreaks from happening. According to researchers who have studied the link between birth control and acne, using birth control pills to treat your blemishes should produce results similar to that of treatment with benzyl peroxide and topical or systemic antibiotics. What Prescription Do I Need?Unfortunately, not every type of birth control pill will help you control your acne. While all birth control pills will work to prevent pregnancy, each pill has slightly different hormone levels. The FDA has approved Ortho Tri-Cyclen and generic norgestimate/ethinyl estradiol for acne treatment. The FDA believes these low-dosage birth control pills are an effective treatment for mild to moderate acne. In clinical studies, nearly 90 percent of women taking Ortho Tri-Cyclen noticed an improvement in their skin. Other birth control pills that are thought to improve acne in most women include Desogen, Demulen, Brevicon, Nelova 1/35, Ovcon 35, and Ortho Novum 7/7/7. However, there is some evidence to suggest these pills are more effective in younger women who have fluctuating hormone levels that are the primary cause of their acne. Older brands of birth control pills that contain estrogen and progestin hormones with higher androgen levels may in fact make your acne worse. This includes birth control pills such as Loestrin1.5/30, Loestrin1/20 Fe, Estrostep Fe, Levlen, Alesse, Ovral, and Norlestrin1/50. ide Effects of Birth Control PillsYou must be aware of any potential side effects when you considering using birth control pills to treat your acne. For example:
First of all, and you probably know this, you shouldn’t squeeze acne, spots or pimples. Let’s face it, you’re going to do it anyway right? If you must there’s a way to do it safely. Thoroughly clean your face and then apply a wet, warm facecloth over your entire face for around 10 minutes. Next, pat your face and hands dry with a soft, clean towel, try not to rub with the towel as this can spread infection. Next, cover your fingers with dry tissue and apply gentle, even pressure to the sides of the blemish. Gently press downward first and then upwards, toward the pimple or spot. Try it once or twice and then leave it. If it’s not ready, forcing the issue will only make matters worse and might even lead to scarring. If the blemish does squeeze out, remove the head and oil with the tissue to avoid spreading bacteria. Finally, immediately apply a treatment product., zit or pimple. Acne pimples are the result of clogged pores and are not, as commonly believed, due to poor hygiene or diet. In fact, four physiological factors are at work in the formation of acne: Factor 1 - Increased Skin Oils (sebum)Healthy skin and hair is naturally softened and lubricated by sebum, an oily secretion of the sebaceous glands. At puberty, changing hormone levels prompt various physical changes including an increase in the production of sebum by the sebaceous glands. Sebaceous glands reside along the hair shaft. The excreted sebum normally travels up along the hair shaft and out through the opening of the hair follicle (pore) onto the skin’s surface. Factor 2 - Rapid Shedding of Dead Skin CellsBeginning at puberty, the cells of the follicle lining tend to shed more rapidly creating a build up of dead skin cells. In normal pores, the dead skin cells mix with sebum and flow up and out to the surface of the skin. In acne-prone skin, accumulating skin cells and sebum stick together and form a soft plug that clogs the skin pore. These clogged pores known as “microcomedones” are invisible to the eye and are the “spark plug” of acne. Factor 3 - BacteriaThis mixture of oil and cells makes a perfect environment for the growth of a normal skin bacteria known as Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes). Excessive growth of P. acnes can cause the formation of larger acne lesions. Factor 4 - Inflammation (Redness)P. acnes multiplies in the clogged hair follicle and causes the redness and swelling that is characteristic of inflammation. Inflammation, if severe, can lead to scarring if not appropriately treated.
Adult AcneTeenagers aren’t the only ones who get acne. In fact, adult acne is a common problem that is on the rise, particularly among women. A study in an issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology cited 54% of women and 40% of men suffer from acne. A large percentage (82%) of both the men and women with severe acne reported that it was a carry over from their teen years. Hormones at WorkAs with teenagers, hormonal activity plays a part in most cases of adult acne. Androgens (male hormones found in both men and women and important in causing teenage acne) are also at work in adult acne. For instance, during menopause as the body curtails the production of estrogen, androgens cause an increased output of sebum by the sebaceous glands. Bacteria and InflammationThe same P. acnes bacteria that afflicts teenagers, can inflame an adult’s clogged pores and cause papules, pustules and the more severe nodules and cysts typical to acne. Adult Skin TypesWhile oily skin is typical of teenage acne, adult acne involves normal or combination skin and in some cases even dry and sensitive skin. Many over-the-counter acne products are directed at teenage acne and contain benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid and other ingredients that can be drying. Potential irritation can lead to skin sensitivity. If you have dry or sensitive skin you may want to consult with a dermatologist to find a safe and comfortable acne medication for your skin type. Gentle Skin CareTreatment of adult acne is the same as for teenagers. It starts with gentle facial cleansing once or twice daily as well as after heavy perspiration in order to help keep the pores clean and free of bacteria. You should only use non-comedogenic or non-acnegenic (oil free products that will not clog your pores) cosmetics, moisturizers and sunscreens. If you have questions or concerns about your acne, acne treatments or the overall health of your skin, you should consult with a dermatologist. |
